Get an Erectile Dysfunction Medication Quickly and Easily

Erectile dysfunction can affect any man, and it often takes a greater toll than people let on. Many men don’t talk about it for a long time, even though there are safe and effective treatment options available.

If you’d like to seek help discreetly, filling out a questionnaire to request a prescription can be a simple first step: You answer medical questions, and a doctor reviews your information to determine whether a prescription is medically appropriate and safe. If so, an appropriate medication can be prescribed without you having to wait in a doctor’s office first.

Equally important: Do not buy erectile dysfunction medications “just like that” from dubious online stores. Especially in so-called “natural” or “over-the-counter” products, undeclared active ingredients and dangerous dosages have been found time and again.

1 Fill out the questionnaire

In the Medgate app, you can answer a few short questions about your health and select the medication you want.

2 Medical Assessment

Our doctors will process your request within 24 hours and, if medically appropriate, issue a prescription.

3 Pick up medication

Pick up your medication as soon as possible at a pharmacy near you.

Costs

Prescription requests through Medgate are billed as part of statutory health insurance coverage (similar to a doctor’s office visit) and are recognized by all Swiss health insurers. A prescription request costs an average of CHF 20.

Furthermore, under certain insurance plans offered by our partner health insurers, there are no costs associated with the deductible or copayment.

How does Viagra work in the body?

For an erection to occur, the blood vessels in the penis must dilate so that more blood can flow in. Sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs known as PDE-5 inhibitors: it promotes vasodilation in the penis when sexual arousal is present. Without arousal, Viagra does not trigger an erection.

How quickly does Viagra work?

  • The effects usually begin after about 30–60 minutes.
  • The effect typically lasts several hours, though this does not mean a “permanent erection.” It means that during this time, it is easier to achieve an erection when aroused.

Prescription Viagra Medications: An Overview of Ingredients and Composition

The original medication is called Viagra. The main ingredient is sildenafil (usually in the form of sildenafil citrate). In addition to the original, there are generic versions containing the same active ingredient, sildenafil. These generally work in a similar way but may differ in excipients, tablet size, or price. Depending on medical suitability, we may also prescribe other active ingredients from the same class, such as vardenafil, avanafil, and tadalafil.

You Should Be Aware of These Triggers for Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction usually doesn’t have “one” single cause. Often, several factors play a role. Typical causes of erectile dysfunction include:

Physical Factors

  • Circulatory problems (e.g., high blood pressure, atherosclerosis)
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity, lack of exercise
  • Smoking, heavy alcohol consumption
  • Hormonal causes (e.g., low testosterone)

Medications

  • Certain blood pressure medications
  • Diuretics
  • Antidepressants (depending on the medication)

Psychological factors

  • Stress, feeling overwhelmed, lack of sleep
  • Pressure to perform, fear of “failure”
  • Relationship conflicts, lack of communication

Erectile dysfunction can be an early sign of cardiovascular problems. That’s why it’s often a good idea to consult a doctor, even if you “just” want a prescription.

Erectile dysfunction in older men: What’s normal, and when should you see a doctor?

As we age, blood flow, hormone levels, and the body’s ability to recover change. It’s therefore more common for erections to be less spontaneous or less stable.

Nevertheless, “It’s just part of getting older” isn’t automatically the best explanation.

You should see a doctor especially if:

  • the problems occur regularly over a period of months
  • you experience pain
  • additional symptoms develop (e.g., shortness of breath, chest pain during exertion)
  • you have relevant pre-existing conditions (e.g., heart disease, diabetes)
  • you are taking medications that could have an effect

Precisely because Viagra and similar medications are not equally safe for everyone, a thorough medical evaluation is crucial.

How You Can Immediately Improve Your Daily Life If You Have Erectile Problems

Medications can help with erectile dysfunction. However, the results are often significantly better if you make a few simple adjustments to your daily routine at the same time. Below are quick and easy steps that help many men:

  • Prioritize sleep: Lack of sleep lowers your stress tolerance and can affect your libido and erections.
  • Cut back on alcohol: Small amounts can help you relax, but too much often has a clearly negative effect.
  • Cut back on or quit smoking: Smoking impairs vascular function.
  • Get more exercise: Even regular walks and 2–3 short workouts per week can have a positive effect.
  • Take the pressure off: The more you feel like “it has to work right now,” the harder it becomes.
  • Talk to your partner: Often, an open conversation can relieve a tremendous amount of pressure.

These tips are no substitute for a medical evaluation, but they can often improve your situation within just a few weeks.

When Doctors Can Prescribe Medication for Erectile Dysfunction

Doctors generally issue a prescription when:

  • erectile dysfunction is likely
  • there are no medical reasons against it
  • taking the medication is considered safe, taking into account your pre-existing conditions and medications

Potential contraindications and risks are particularly important. For example, Viagra must not be taken together with nitrates or other so-called NO donors (which also include “poppers”). Nitrates are medications commonly used to treat chest pain (angina pectoris) (e.g., nitroglycerin). NO donors are active ingredients or substances that release nitric oxide (NO) and thereby dilate blood vessels. When combined with Viagra, this can cause a dangerously sharp drop in blood pressure, potentially leading to a life-threatening situation.

In certain cardiovascular conditions, sexual activity itself may not be medically recommended. In such cases, Viagra is also not suitable and should only be used after medical evaluation.

How much does Viagra cost?

The cost depends primarily on whether you use the brand-name Viagra or a generic version containing sildenafil, the dosage and package size you need, and the terms under which the pharmacy dispenses the medication. As a rough guide, Viagra typically ranges from around CHF 90 to CHF 200, depending on the package. Generic sildenafil is often significantly cheaper and can start at around CHF 35, depending on the package. If price is a concern for you, a suitable generic medication can be a sensible way to save money.

Does health insurance cover the cost of your Viagra?

In Switzerland, Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are generally prescription-only for erectile dysfunction but are usually not covered by basic health insurance because they are not on the list of specialty drugs. This means that in most cases, you’ll have to pay for Viagra or sildenafil yourself.

Whether supplemental insurance covers part of the cost depends on your specific policy. Often, no reimbursement is provided under supplemental insurance either. If you’re unsure, it’s worth taking a quick look at your policy or contacting your insurance provider directly.

Prescription for Erectile Dysfunction Medications: What Options Are There Besides Viagra?

Viagra isn’t the only option. Commonly used active ingredients include:

  • Sildenafil (Viagra and generics)
  • Tadalafil (Cialis and generics)
  • Vardenafil (Levitra and generics)
  • Avanafil (e.g., Spedra)

These medications differ primarily in how long they last and how quickly they take effect. Which option is right for you depends largely on your daily routine, your expectations (e.g., “predictability” vs. a longer duration of action), and your health.

If PDE-5 inhibitors are not suitable or are not effective enough, there are other treatment options (e.g., topical agents such as alprostadil or mechanical aids). However, this must be evaluated on an individual basis by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects, Drug Interactions, and Warning Signs of Viagra-Type Medications

Like any medication, Viagra can cause side effects. Common ones include:

  • Headaches
  • Facial flushing/hot flashes
  • Stuffy nose
  • Digestive problems
  • Dizziness
  • Temporary visual disturbances (e.g., altered color perception)

It is important to recognize warning signs that require you to seek immediate medical attention:

  • Chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath
  • sudden (partial) loss of vision or hearing
  • a painful erection or an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours

Very important: Do not take Viagra with nitrates or NO donors (including “poppers”).

Always be honest about which medications you take regularly, whether you have cardiovascular disease, or whether you’ve ever had problems with blood pressure, a stroke, a heart attack, or eye problems.

The "Blue Pill" for Men: Myths, Facts, and Safe Use

There are many myths circulating about the “blue pill.”

Myth 1

Many people expect Viagra to automatically increase sexual desire. This is not the case: Viagra does not increase libido, but rather supports an erection only when sexual arousal is present.

Myth 2

When it comes to dosage, the same rule applies: more is not better. A dose that is too high generally does not make the effect “stronger,” but it does increase the risk of side effects. The appropriate dosage should therefore be determined on an individual basis by a doctor.

Myth 3

Ordering erectile dysfunction medications online without a prescription may sound convenient, but it’s often risky. Illegal products may contain counterfeit medications, be incorrectly dosed, or contain undeclared active ingredients.

Important: You should only take Viagra after a medical evaluation, have a doctor determine the appropriate dosage for you, consistently avoid dangerous combinations (e.g., with nitrates), and obtain the medication exclusively through a reputable source—with a prescription from a pharmacy.
